What is Slashing?

Slashing involves cutting down overgrown vegetation such as grass, weeds, small shrubs and trees to a manageable height. It's an essential activity for maintaining large properties, especially in rural areas, and is particularly important before the bushfire season.

Why is Slashing Important?

Fire Safety: Slashing reduces the amount of dry vegetation, which can reduce the fuel load for a potential bushfire. By cutting grass and other vegetation low to the ground, you reduce the risk of fires starting or spreading rapidly.

Weed Control: Regular slashing helps manage and control weeds by preventing them from seeding and spreading. This is especially important in spring when weeds love to grow.

Improved Accessibility: Clearing areas of your property by slashing allows for better access, whether for personal use or in the event of a fire.

Improved Visibility - Snakes: Overgrown vegetation is the perfect habitat for snakes. Slashing opens up the area making it easier to see where you are going and makes it less appealing to these animals - making your property safer.

It Just Looks Good!: A well-maintained property is visually appealing and is the envy of all your neighbours. Regular slashing helps keep it tidy and manageable.

When Should You Slash?

Growing Season (Late Winter to Early Spring):

Ideally, you want to begin slashing in late winter or early spring. This will remove the old growth before the new growth begins. It will also help with weed control as new growth can be more easily managed however it does depend on the weed species.

If your goal is weed control, you want to slash weeds before they go to seed. This cuts down the weeds before they have the chance to reproduce.

You may need to follow up with more slashing during the growing season as some weeds will regrow after the initial slashing.

Before Bushfire Season (Late Spring to Early Summer):

It's crucial to slash before the peak of bushfire season, typically late spring to early summer. This ensures that dry vegetation is minimized during the most dangerous periods.

You also need to plan ahead as once the weather dries, slashing itself can become a fire risk. In critical conditions, the local council will issue a harvest movement ban which means you cannot operate machinery.
